The Problem
Guatemala's children suffer from the highest rate of chronic malnutrition in all of Latin America. Sixty-eight percent of indigenous women are illiterate. The average indigenous woman gives birth to eight children. Pneumonia is the leading cause of death in children under the age of five. Three-quarters of all rural residents fall below
the poverty line.
The Solution
We are breaking this vicious cycle of poverty by working hand-in-hand with the indigenous Mayans in rural mountain communities. By placing great emphasis on sustainability, we first invest in the people and teach them how to work in groups to realize results. Focusing on health and education, we assist them to develop, implement and monitor their own projects while building their capacity to make
long-term changes. They learn skills and strategies to achieve healthy families, well-functioning communities, and hope for a brighter future.
