Creating Learning Opportunities

Upgrading Schools

Students are motivated and want to learn but the schools lack resources to create learning opportunities. To assist village schools we first work directly with the principal and parents’ committees to prioritize their needs. Some of their requests include access to the internet, computers, paying a technology teacher, buying kitchen equipment, training teachers, and providing teaching materials.

Parents cannot help pay for these items because they earn only enough to barely support their families. Their economic situation is worsened because of the rising cost of living. Without help, the students and teachers cannot advance and keep pace with the ever-changing world.

Hungry kids can’t learn. The schools receive a payment from the Department of Education in Guatemala to buy a small amount of food per student per day but the schools do not have kitchen equipment – stoves, refrigerators, tables, utensils – to prepare the food. Providing this equipment allows the moms to prepare the food and improves nutrition for the students.
